Profile Characterization Analysis for a Block offshore the Netherlands (2025)

Background

Current profile analysis was required to perform VIV (vortex-induced vibration) fatigue analysis at an offshore location in the North Sea.

Scope of work

CA Metocean was appointed by AS Mosley & Co. Ltd to provide current profile data at the interest location, including all-year omni-directional percentage exceedance of total current at surface and through the water column, as well as 500 characteristic current profiles.

Key features

  • Several current hindcasts were obtained at the location of interest and compared to ensure consistency and select the most appropriate to derive results.
  • Current Profile Characterization was performed on the chosen data set using Maximum Dissimilarity Algorithms (MDA) to select 500 representative current profiles.
  • The MDA was run using the omni-directional current speed data at all the available model layers through the profile
  • The resultant 500 profiles, with their associated % occurrence were provided in Excel format
