Background
Operational and extreme metocean parameters where required at two locations of the east coast of the Sakha Republic, Sea of Okhotsk, to support the PCI and superstructures design of Yakutia project.
Scope of Work
CA Metocean was appointed by StomGeo Ltd to provide the necessary metocean data including:
- 1, 10, 100 and 10,000-year return period independent extreme waves (total sea, sea and swell components), winds, water levels and currents for the all year- omnidirectional, monthly omni-directional and all year- directional cases
- All-year omni-directional associated extremes of total sea Hs-Hourly wind speed and total sea Hs-Surface current
- Operational wave, wind and current data including: monthly percentage exceedance tables, monthly rosettes and persistence statistics
- Meteorological data including: air humidity and temperature, ice, snow, rainfall, cloud cover and fog
Key Features
- A high resolution (up to~100m) hindcast covering the interest area was developed setting up a numerical spectral wave transformation model (Mike 21SW) and a 2-dimensional hydrodynamic model (Mike 21 FM) underpinned by a grid (mesh) across the domain with higher resolution around the interest sites
- Simulation of 20 years of total sea surface height variations and currents across the whole modelling area was carried out using time series of total water levels as input to force the hydrodynamic model
- Propagation of 20 years of two dimensional wave spectra from the model’s open boundaries to the interest areas was then performed using the water level variation obtained from the hydrodynamic model as input, as well as wave spectral energy time series from a third party provider
- Ice coverage and wind were included in the simulation of both waves energy and flows
- Once the simulations were completed, 20 years long time series of 2D wave spectrum and flows were extracted at the interest locations
- Wave partitioning was done using CA Metocean implementation of 2D wave spectrum partition MATLAB script, based on Hanson and Phillips (2001), to obtain time series of total sea, sea and swell spectral parameters (Hs, Tp and direction)
- Requested deliverables were derived at each of the locations of interest
